On Sunday 6th June, volunteers from the North East were recognised and rewarded for all their hard work, dedication and enthusiasm towards Rugby League in the region. In conjunction with Gateshead Thunder the volunteers and their guests enjoyed pre-match hospitality at the Hilton Hotel prior to the Gateshead Thunder v Swinton Lions game.
In order to acknowledge the unpaid support these volunteers contribute to the sport of Rugby League the RFL annually recognise all their volunteers' achievements. The North East winner's for 2010 who were rewarded at the event were as follows;
Donna Barham, Whitley Bay Barbarians - Coach of the Year
Phil Selby, Durham Tigers - Volunteer Coordinator of the Year
Lynn Redshaw, Whitley Bay Barbarians - Volunteer of the Year
Gemma Taylor, Jarrow Vikings - Young Volunteer of the Year
The North East volunteers will then be forwarded to the national panel and the winners announced in August.
Jade Mackie, North East Volunteer Coordinator stated 'I am so proud of all the volunteers throughout the North East who dedicate a huge amount of time and energy to Rugby League, and I am more than aware the sport would not be able to exist without them. All of the volunteers who received their awards today thoroughly deserve them and I know all the players, parents and other volunteers at the club are delighted their hard work has been acknowledged.
It has been a pleasure to spend the afternoon with them today and I hope they all enjoyed the hospitality and Gateshead Thunder game. With the expansion of Rugby League in the North East I am sure we will be receiving increased nominations year on year.'
